Silver Star Mercantile sending a prayer to all to look around and count your blessings one by one
Spring time brings all sorts of rebirth into our lives...I would like to share a story that I had with an artist friend...it is one that reflects from long ago to what we are doing every day in our lives.
Silver Star is carrying the most unusual Letters, they are made by a local man who we will call the HOBO-man. When he first showed me his art I was so excited because it made me smile. I had not thought of what they represented and the long history of the HOBO. I remember as a little girl dressing up like a HOBO one year for Halloween...did I know there was a real HOBO...no I did not.
Here is the story he shared with me.
What is a HOBO - a person who has NOTHING... but willing to do anything in order to make life the best he knew how. Thus, the HOBO as far back as the 1800's rode the railroad traveling from place to place. Doing odd jobs for people in trade for food, drink or even a place to sleep. HOBO's were not known for being mean or for getting in trouble. It was just a way of life...in later years the number of people riding the rails grew thru the great depression men-women and children, thousands rode the rail, they had nothing and at least this was a way of getting from place to good. They even had a lanuage of their own...they would leave signs for the next, to let them know who or what was safe, or to stay away from...
Now to explain why this artist found this so wonderful and simple...as the HOBO traveled his/her life they would pick up items that made them feel special or remind them of something in their life, or sparkled ...most did not read or write, but the aphabet was special to them...so the artist incorportated both the joy of collecting and the alphabet...Putting the 2 different items together began to bring a smile to his face with each letter he created...
Many famous people came from the life of a HOBO. As I reflect to that way of life...no I could not lived it, but I would have found the fun and joy in the creating just as they did...remember, there is a little HOBO in each one of us.
Enjoy what you see when you look at the creations of the HOBO-man...
he says it best...enjoy your journey!
At this time of year so many people get a second chance to start over...Just like the HOBO
Smile Always,
Susan Myers
